Vinesh Phogat

Vinesh Phogat (born August 25, 1994) is an Indian female wrestler. She became the primary Indian woman wrestler who won the gold medal in both Commonwealth and Asian Games. Phogat became the primary Indian athlete; she is also nominated for Laureus World Sports Awards in the year 2019. Phogat comes from a very successful family of wrestlers, with her cousins together, Phogat being international wrestlers and Commonwealth Games medalists.

Education and Early Life

Vinesh is the daughter of a wrestler named Rajpal Phogat and a cousin of wrestlers of her two siblings Geetha and Babita. Both her cousins have won the gold medal in the 55 kg category in the Commonwealth Games. In allowing her cousins and herself to pursue competitive wrestling, where both her father and uncle had to cater to immense pressure and opposition from the community in their village that is in Haryana.

They were adjudged as going against the morals and values of that community. Phogat’s cousin, Ritu is also a world-level wrestler and has won a trophy at the 2016 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship. On 13 December in the year 2018, she married her long-time boyfriend and fellow wrestler named Somvir Rathee of Bakhta Khera village of Jind district, who may be a two occasions gold medalist in the national championship. The couple knew one another since 2011 and both work for the Indian Railways where they met and feel infatuated.

Commonwealth Championship in 2022

She won the decoration in the women’s 53 kg event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham, England. The Indian had entered several other events as world number three but then got back to world favored by jumping into a total of 14 points. The Canadian was ranked as low as 40 before their tournament but it is now just behind Vinesh Phogat at number two.
