Sindhutai Sapkal

It is always said that mothers are the strongest. We have often heard about a woman having 10-12 children. Or say 20! But what if I tell you that there is a woman who is a mother to 1500+ orphan children, would you believe it? Sindhutai Sapkal is the name! She is an angel in disguise. She has mothered more than 1500 orphan kids in India. She was the unwanted child of her family and never received love as a child.

She was married off at a young age to a man who was 20 years elder than her. By 20 years of her, she had 3 children. When she was nine months pregnant with her fourth child, she was brutally beaten up by her husband and left out of her house. She delivered a healthy baby girl in a cow shelter. She did not get back to her in-law house and roamed from one place to other with her daughter. She spent her nights at crematories so that she is not molested by men. She then found comfort in Chikhaldara, where started begging to provide her children with a comfortable living. She noticed that on the platform many children had no parents. She tried to provide the orphan kids with the love of a mother. She started begging so that she could maintain their living. She even gave her biological child to a trust so that there remains no partiality between her and her adopted children. She is revered with the title of ‘Mai’ which means mother.

She has also done exemplary deeds throughout her life. Like she demanded compensation for the death of the tribal people in the forest due to an animal attack from Indira Gandhi. She is a strong-willed woman who gave shelter to thousands of kids and gave them a living. Today she is a proud matriarch of a family with thousands of children, grandchildren and many more relations. Many of her children are established. She has received more than 900 awards and recognitions, both nationally and internationally. She has also received Padma Shri in 2021.
