Childhood and Upbringing
Emilia Isobel Euphemia Emilia Isobel Euphemia Emilia Isobel Rose Clarke was born in London on the 23rd of October 1986. She grew up in the county of Oxfordshire. Her father, Peter Clarke, was a theatre sound engineer from Wolverhampton, and her mother, Jennifer, was a businesswoman who, as of 2020, was the vice-president for marketing for a worldwide management consulting firm. Clarke’s maternal grandmother was the offspring of a secret romance between Clarke’s great-grandmother and a guy from the Indian subcontinent, according to a 2018 interview.
After viewing the musical Show Boat when she was three years old, Clarke grew interested in acting. Her father took her to a Broadway; audition for Neil Simon’s musical The Goodbye Girl when she was ten years old. Clarke went to Headington’s Rye St Antony School and Oxford’s St Edward’s School, where she graduated in 2005. “I went to posh boarding schools, but I wasn’t the posh girl; at posh boarding schools,” she said in a 2016 interview with Time Out. She also noted that the majority of the students at her Oxford boarding school came from conservative families; making her and some of her friends feel like outcasts. Clarke applied to RADA, LAMDA, and Guildhall after graduation without success. She worked and travelled before enrolling in the Drama Centre London in 2009, where she received her bachelor’s degree. After which she made her debut in Hollywood and the rest is history.
