Adele Laurie Blue Adkins MBE (born Adele Laurie Blue Adkins) is an English singer and songwriter. She is one of the best-selling musicians in the world, with over 120 million albums sold. Adele earned a record deal with XL Recordings after graduating from the BRIT School in 2006. Her debut album, 19, was released in 2008, and the tracks “Chasing Pavements” and “Make You Feel My Love” charted in the UK top five. The album was certified eight times platinum in the United Kingdom and triple platinum in the United States. Adele received the Brit Award for Best New Artist and the Grammy Award for Best New Artist.

Childhood and Upbringing

Adele Laurie Blue Adkins was born in the Tottenham district of London on May 5, 1988, to a Welsh father, Marc Evans, and an English mother, Penny Adkins. Adele was raised by her mother after Evans departed when she was two. She began singing when she was four years old and claims to have developed a fascination with voices. Adele, then nine years old, and her mother, who worked as a furniture maker and an adult-learning events organiser, moved to Brighton, England, in 1997.

She and her mother returned to London in 1999, first to Brixton, then to West Norwood in south London, the setting for her first song “Hometown Glory.” She spent a lot of her childhood in Brockwell Park, where she used to play the guitar and sing to her friends, as she recalls in her 2015 song “Million Years Ago.”

Debut into the Music Industry

Adele released two songs in the fourth issue of the online arts periodical, four months after graduating. For a class project, she had produced a three-song demo and delivered it to a buddy. The demo was placed on Myspace, where it gained a lot of attention and resulted in a phone call from Richard Russell, the CEO of the music label XL Recordings. She had her doubts about the offer because the only record label she knew was Virgin Records, and she went to the meeting with a friend.

Nick Huggett of XL referred Adele to September Management manager Jonathan Dickins, who became her official representative in June 2006. September was managing Jamie T at the time, which drew Adele, who is a huge fan of the British singer-songwriter. In September 2006, Huggett signed Adele to XL Records.
